OUR INDUSTRY FOCUS

How to book an assessment

What happens in a Study Needs Assessment?

An assessment is a meeting with a specialist assessor who will identify your needs and recommend a package of support. The assessment generally covers:

  • Discussion of needs: Your assessor will talk with you about how your disability or learning difficulty affects your studies.

  • Recommendation of support: Based on the discussion, the assessor will recommend specific equipment, software, or human support, such as a specialist mentor or note-taker.

  • Creation of a report: A detailed report is created that outlines the recommended support and is sent to your funding body, like Student Finance England.

How are assessments funded?

For eligible students, the assessment is funded by the DSA. For those who are not eligible or are unable to access DSA funding, the assessment may be funded by a student's educational institution or through an apprenticeship program.

How to book an assessment

  1. Receive confirmation: Before booking, you must be advised by your funding body (such as Student Finance England or Wales) that you need an assessment.

  2. Find a provider: You can find a list of approved providers on the UK government's website by entering your postcode.

  3. Book the assessment: Contact an Access Assessment Centre directly, either online or by phone, to book your appointment. Remote assessments via video call (e.g., Zoom or Teams) are often available for greater flexibility.
